Rep. Tupola: Suicide Awareness Town Hall
February 18, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
On Saturday, February 18th, from 6:30-8:00pm, the Office of Representative Andria Tupola (District 43 – Māʻili, Nānākuli, Ko Olina, Honokai Hale, and ʻEwa) will host a suicide awareness town hall at the KSBE Community Learning Center in Māʻili.
The event will feature Dr. Linda Nahulu, a child and adolescent psychiatrist from the University of Hawaii, and Dr. Craig Nakatsuka, a retired palliative care doctor working with Hawaii’s Partnership for Appropriate and Compassionate Care (HPACC). The former will address teenage suicide prevention, the latter the dangers of the assisted suicide legislation proposed this session.
“With four suicides at Nanakuli High School, the tragedy of suicide is very real to our community. Our goal for this event is to teach parents to differentiate between symptoms of depression and what is normal for a teenager, how to address each instance, and what we can do to help the next generation flourish.”
“Further, with the assisted suicide bills floating through the Legislature, we want to bring awareness to the dangers of these bills, and inform the public on better, more positive ways we can bring end of life care to our kupuna.”
