Māʻili, Oahu – Representative Andria Tupola (District 43 – Ewa Villages, Kalaeloa, Honokai Hale, Nanakai Gardens, Ko Olina, Kahe Point, Nānākuli, Lualualei, and Māʻili) is inviting all community members and stakeholders to learn and discuss some changes happening in the Mā’ili area known as the Voice of America site.
In 2007, a portion of the area formerly known as the voice of america site was found to be contaminated. In 2008, a portion of the area not contaminated was used to build a transitional shelter called Ulu Ke Kukui. Ten years later we are still waiting to here if the contamination was successfully cleaned up, the transitional shelter contract is ending, and DHHL received $800k this year in a Capital Improvement Project (CIP) funds for designing and planning. The surrounding community wants to know how these changes will impact their family, traffic, schools, housing, etc. Department of Health, U.S. Coast Guard, Ulu Ke Kukui, and Department of Hawaiian Homelands will be in attendance to update the community.
“I’m hosting a town hall to encourage all stakeholders to involve community input in their decisions. Ulu Ke Kukui provides a lot of services to our community and I would like to see that continue. If there is a proposal to build more houses, we should also consider that the closest elementary is over capacity” said Rep. Tupola.
