For the first time, Senator Gabbard attended the Hawai‘i Youth Challenge Academy graduation for Class 15-02, at the William Charles Lunalilo Center – Kamehameha Schools Hawaii Campus Auditorium – on Hawai’i Island, December 22, where he presented a scholarship to Joseph Silva who plans to attend Hawai’i Community College, in Hospitality and Tourism. He also gave Honorary Certificates from the Hawai’i State Senate to the 70 graduating cadets. The Youth Challenge Academy gives 16 to 18 year-old non-traditional at risk youth a second chance to obtain their high school diploma and become productive citizens in their community, in a 5 ½ month quasi-military training program to develop life skills and employment potential. Founded in August 1994, the Academy is administered by the Hawai‘i National Guard.
