Senator Gabbard gave a motivational talk to the Hawai‘i Youth Challenge Academy graduating Class of 43 on December 16, in addition to attending their graduation on December 18. For those who aren’t familiar, the academy gives 16 to 18 year-old “non-traditional at risk” youth a second chance to obtain their high school diploma and become productive citizens in their community, in a 5 ½ month quasi-military training program to develop life skills and employment potential. Founded in August 1994, the Academy is administered by the Hawai‘i National Guard. The program accepts about 100 young people each semester, with about 80% percent graduating and going on to earn their high school diploma. Mahalo to Major General Arthur “Joe” Logan, the state Adjutant General, and Youth Challenge Director Juan D. Williams for their dedication to this amazing program!
