Contract Awarded to Improve Athletic Facilities

Improving the athletic facilities at Kapolei High School remains a priority for our administration, and the state recently hired a contractor for the much-anticipated improvement project.

With funds our administration made available last year, the state Department of Education awarded a contract on Feb. 5th to 57 Builders Ltd. in Honolulu.

Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2008 and take about a year to complete.

The planned improvements are part of our efforts to support and enhance the student experience at Kapolei High School, where we want to help ensure the success of our student athletes.

At the same time, we want the improvements to provide a positive experience for both student athletes and spectators.

To achieve that, our administration released $4,797,000 in August 2007 to fund improvements that will help protect the overall safety and health of all students during athletic events.

The designs were completed in July 2006.

The improvements call for building bleachers for the opposing team's side of the school's football field. The bleachers are expected to help ease overcrowding and eliminate threats to public safety, especially during football games that draw as many as 8,000 spectators.

Another portion of the funds will pay for an equipment and laundry room, which would eliminate the need for parents and coaches to haul loads of dirty athletic equipment to wash at home.

Then, there's an allocation to cover the construction of an announcer's booth, which will be built above a coach's office on one side of the field. The booth will be used to film and call games. The school has been using a makeshift press box in a corner of the field for that purpose.

From our administration's perspective, sports can make school more attractive and help reinforce the importance of being a good student.

And these improvements are viewed by us as important for the continued growth of sports and physical education programs offered to students attending Kapolei High School.
