In ancient Hawaiian times priests would watch for the appearance of Makali`i - the Pleiades - a star cluster which appears in the evening sky in October. When appearing in the eastern sky shortly after sunset, this announced the new moon and beginning of the Makahiki season.
This year it will begin on the evening of October 28, according to Michael Kumukauoha Lee, a native Hawaiian cultural practitioner who lives in Ewa and who is also a Papakilohoku - a Star Priest. Lee has help found an organization called the Kanehili Cultural Hui to identify and preserve Ewa Hawaiian cultural sites and trails, as well as the still surviving Ewa limu populations.
