Will Create an Estimated 150 Jobs On January 14th, community members, elected officials, local businesspeople, and representatives of Foodland gathered to break ground and hold an official blessing for the four-acre Kapolei Village Center, which will be anchored by Foodland. The center will be located at the intersection of the new Kapolei Parkway, Wakea, Kuou, and Alohikea Streets. Nearby the Villages of Kapolei, the Mehana at Kapolei subdivision, and the proposed Leihano Senior Village, the center is also in close proximity to the future H-1 ramps via Wakea Street, making it convenient to many of the residents, workforce and visitors of Oahu’s Second City. Foodland Kapolei is scheduled to open in spring 2011. Along with the 35,500 square-foot Foodland, an additional 20,000 square feet of space in the shopping center will be available for approximately a dozen other retail businesses, which could include restaurants, fast-food shops, medical services, gifts, apparel, or financial services. It is estimated that approximately 150 jobs will be created when the center opens. “As our new city of Kapolei continues to grow, it is crucial that services and retail continue to expand to meet the needs of our residents and workforce,” said Representative Sharon E. Har, D-40. “I am thrilled about the new jobs that will be created by Foodland and the other future retailers of the Kapolei Village Center as they bring added convenience to the daily lives of Kapolei’s residents.” Foodland will include The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf café and indoor and outdoor seating areas in addition to full-service grocery, produce, meat, seafood, deli, and bakery departments that emphasize local products from Hawaii. Locally-owned and operated, Foodland is the largest grocery retailer in Hawaii, with a total of 31 stores employing 2,500 people across four islands. “We are excited that our vision of opening a new supermarket to serve the Kapolei community is quickly becoming a reality,” said Jenai S. Wall, Foodland Chairman and CEO. “In addition to bringing all the best that Foodland has to offer to this community, Kapolei Village Center will provide an inviting and comfortable setting where residents will enjoy going for their grocery and other shopping needs.” Kapolei Village Center will be the only shopping center in the state of Hawaii to begin construction in 2010, according to Colliers Monroe Friedlander, which will manage and lease the center. Further information on leasing can be found at www.KapoleiVillageCenter.com.
