Taking Greater Responsibility for the Kapolei
Community
Among our administration's priorities has been recognizing people across
the state who are taking responsibility for others by performing volunteer
community service.
In Kapolei, we recently recognized nearly two dozen volunteers who made
a meaningful contribution to the success of the 2009 Kapolei Police Athletic
League's basketball season for young boys and girls.
These working parents each received commendations from our administration
for volunteering at least eight hours a week to help more than 80 youth between
the ages of 7 and 14 get an opportunity to play basketball.
Among these volunteers were eight coaches who taught our youth the value
of respect among teammates and opponents as well as commitment toward a common
goal.
Among the volunteers were 11 "team moms" who served as examples of
cooperation, not competition. They never showed favoritism to the young
children based on their demonstrated skills in the sport.
They were instrumental in helping the league to increase our children's
sense of self-worth by putting an emphasis on group or team success, rather
than individual achievement.
In addition, the "team moms" worked together to encourage young children
in the league to be nutrition-conscious in their food choices by preparing
healthy post-game meals.
It takes a lot of good, hardworking and community-minded people to
achieve the kind of success the Kapolei Police Athletic League enjoyed this
year.
Therefore, on behalf of the people of Hawai‘i, I commend the efforts of
the Kapolei PAL volunteers for their roles in helping to create a better
Hawai‘i by taking responsibility for others in our community.
