KAPOLEI, HAWAI‘I (November 30, 2023) – In a significant step towards empowering the Native Hawaiian community, Ho‘omaka Marketplace is set to celebrate its grand opening in December 2023. This innovative community-driven retail shopping center aims to economically uplift Native Hawaiians, with all ground lease proceeds benefitting the Kapolei Community Development Corporation (KCDC), a grassroots non-profit organization dedicated to the Kapolei Homestead Community’s prosperity.
KCDC Executive Director Chantal Keliihoomalu shared her enthusiasm: “The opening of Ho‘omaka Marketplace marks a pivotal moment in our journey towards self-sustainability. This center isn’t just about shopping; it’s a symbol of our commitment to enriching the lives of our community members. With the support of these proceeds, we’re poised to enhance facilities, broaden educational opportunities, bolster emergency services, and create meaningful employment for Native Hawaiian families.”
Located at the prime junction of Kapolei and Kualakai Parkways, the 45,737-square-foot Ho‘omaka Marketplace will feature anchor tenants like Longs Drugs, a full-size Chick-fil-A, HELE Gas, and 7-Eleven, along with ample parking facilities. The grand opening will be staggered, with detailed schedules as follows:
· HELE Gas and 7-Eleven: Dec. 2, 2023
· Longs Drugs: Dec. 10, 2023
· Chick-fil-A©: Date to be confirmed in December
Kali Watson, Chairman of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, commented on the project’s significance: “Ho‘omaka Marketplace is more than a commercial venture; it’s a beacon of hope and growth for our Native Hawaiian community in Kapolei. Through strategic partnerships and thoughtful planning, we’re paving the way for a future where economic empowerment and cultural preservation go hand-in-hand.”
The Marketplace also includes a unique feature – a 1,200-square-foot homestead business incubator operated by KCDC, fostering local entrepreneurship and innovation.
The development of Ho‘omaka Marketplace is a collaborative effort involving KZ Companies, LLC, KCDC, and the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, with Architects Hawaii Limited, Wilson Okamoto, and Coffman Engineers leading the design. Allied Builders is the prime general contractor and First Hawaiian Bank provided the financing.
