Malama Kapolei

July 9, 2016 @ 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Ulu A‘e Learning Center, a Native Hawaiian nonprofit, in partnership with the City and County of Honolulu, Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center, Hawaiian Electric and Hunt Development, is pleased to announce Mālama Kapolei, an event to celebrate the rededication of the Pā Hula and the installation of signage at Pu‘u ‘O Kapolei.  The event will take place on July 9, 2016 from 3 to 7 p.m at the Kapolei Regional Park, Diamond Head end.  The event will culminate in a sunset performance by the Royal Hawaiian Band.

Executive Director and Kumu Hula Miki‘ala Kanekoa said, “Ulu A‘e is very grateful for this support in sharing a significant cultural and community asset in an afternoon of rededication, hula, music, food and crafts.  Ulu A‘e and other native organizations have spent a number of years reclaiming the hula mound and surrounding areas to celebrate the “piko” of the Kapolei community and its significance as a navigational and seasonal guide for our ancestors and the home of Kamaunuaniho, the grandmother of the demi-god deity, Kamapua‘a. We would like to share this site with more members of our community for their use, enjoyment and assistance in continuing its traditions and history.”

Ulu A‘e Learning Center was formed in 2014 to empower and enrich lives through programs that develop skills, build confidence and promote healthy relationships based on Hawaiian values and customs.  Our programs include:

  • a culture based afterschool program to teach keiki about their community through hula, mele and site visits;
  • an outdoor Hawaiian studies course at Lanikohonua for 7th graders, conducted in partnership with the Lanikūhonua Cultural Institute and the Bishop Museum;
  • a monthly service day at the native and cultural plant garden, Mālaola, in Kunia, conducted in partnership with the Mālama Learning Center and Pioneer Farms;
  • a monthly service day at Pu‘u ‘O Kapolei, a cultural and native garden site at the top of Kapolei Regional Park; and
  • an annual Chili Cook Off community event that provides operating and scholarship funds for the organization.

Ulu A‘e Learning Center has assisted hundreds of keiki and their families in learning more about Hawaiian values, customs and historic sites in their community.  It is the long term goal of Ulu A‘e to have a community knowledgeable about its history, culture and language.
